Design proposal

Summary of my design idea

Executive Summary

We are living in a time of ever-evolving advanced technologies, yet it is human vision that has been at the forefront of shaping the future. Clothing capable of mediating relationships between people and with our environment is a persistent theme in technology circles. My design for a cyclist is a thorough and exciting cross-disciplinary exploration of the future of fashion. It will contribute to safety, reduces injury, and provides increased comfort while cycling. Mainly, there are two different sources of digital finishing, chrome-waxed leather and luminescence fabric. Moreover, my design pursues simplicity of garments which will affect to reduce seaming in construction of garments. It also has multiple functionalities to bespoke customisation of garments to cyclist who especially wants to wear cycling jacket in a working place or social activity.
Statement of Problem
There are enormous number of people who commutes by bicycle or motorbike in London. We often find many cyclist, exposed in danger on a roadway in this bustling city. They do wears helmet, luminescence jacket or vest to prevent a danger, however, apart from the safety matters, there are still lots of consumer who wear suits inside of cyclist jacket when they are commuting. At this point, I became interested in those specified consumer group. what if I design the cyclist jacket that has more developed functionalities with digital finishing and also fashionable?

Design Objectives and Technical Approach

(1) safety and comfort

It contributes to safety, reduces exposure to an accident on a roadway and extraordinary comfort to user. Firstly, the electroluminescent fabric will gives superb visibility in half light or dark . A recent innovation based on this technology is a flexible light that can be cut, folded and twisted to create what the firm calls 'luminescent embroidery'. Secondly, the chrome-waxed leather will be resistance to oil, exhaust gases, antifreeze agents and temperature variations make this leather the ideal solution for protecting cyclist from the extreme weather.

(2) reduced seaming in construction of garments

There is no need to make garments complicatedly by using leather ruled, cut, ceased and folded. variable, mutable, adjustable, fluctuating; one garment is potentially several.

(3) multiple functionalities.

Customer have variety of options to chose the use of garments which can be wear in their works, friend meetings or even parties. Also, the transformable shape will produce different functionalities which can be transformed as a jacket, one-piece, skirt, scarf and poncho.

Generating Design Concept

The inspiration is from the 60's biker leather jacket in terms of the biker's 'second skin'. The leather offered protection from the cold and from bad weather without hampering the rider or increasing wild resistance as well as fashionable looking. Plus, the luminescence fabric emit coloured light beneficial to health and it also gives high visibility and interactivity in clothing. With this material, I'd like to design minimised shape of garments to reduce seaming in construction of garments. It gives cyclist numerous options and possibilities. Creative idea of harmonious wardrobe varies in interchangeable elements in production .

Material research _ Leather

Chrome waxed leather

Its resistance to oil, exhaust gases, antifreeze agents and temperature variatins make this leather the ideal solution for protecting hydraulic seals on aircraft flaps, to cite one example.

Stretch leather
tear-resisstant material with long-lasting elasticity that became an immediate success among makiers of clothing, footwear, accessories. Afte it has bee stretched, it returns to its original shape. It can beworked, stitched, glued, cleaned and so forth using the same methds that are applied to traditional leather.

My idea progress

1. Who is the person that you are designing for?
: the people who commute by bicycle & motorbike

2. What is the environment in which they will experience with your design?
: on the street in London, commuting

3. What actions do they perform within this environment?
: Helmet, luminescence jacket, vest -> to prevent the danger on road

4. What situations do they experience/risks are they exposed to?
: People who wear suits inside of this jacket when they are commuting. They often face with a
danger of Car accident

5. How often do they encounter these situations?
: Everyday when they are commuting

6. What are their needs and priorities?
: Function/Technology + Fashion + Reduce the risk of accidents

7. What solutions already exist in your chosen design area or related design areas and what is good and bad about them?
: -Luminescence jacket
+) easy to be seen, waterproof
-) low quality fabric (poly), x social, x fashion, x function

8. How could Digital printing and the multiple and locatable performance it offers improve on the current products used?
: Air, Elastic, Industrial, Light, Smart, Sustainable, Temperature, Waterproof, Mobility, Safety...

9. Are there certain behaviours that you want to promote and prevent?
: promote better functionalities and fashion

10. How might the deliverable functionalities support this behavioural change?
: Light weight fabric/ Elastic/ Chromic function -> Convenience, Practicality and Utility
Fashionable design/ apply on different garment -> "Utility chic", "Utility clothing"

11. How does your proposal related to the aims and objectives of other stakeholders?
: "Give cyclist personality!"
-Function+Fashion+Safety+Social

What we need!

1. Functionality
-Super modern clothing

ex_Mandarina Duck
-numerous options and possibilities
-individuals/ harmonious wardrobe (social situation, context)
-day-to-day needs
-interchangeable elements in production
-gradual evolution
-cross-seasonal aesthetic
-switching one old and worn item for one new item
-parkas, jackets, dresses, trousers and skirts => giving the pieces a seamless appearance
-co-ordinate system of dressing

"Separates, layering and versatile uses produce apparel that is not foreordained but that is ultimately in the hands of the man or women who wear the clothing" - Richard Martin

2. Mobility

Metropolitan people carry a wide variety of items

-multi pockets
-plugged-in body
-wearable luggage
-Task bag

3. Shelter & Protection

The safety of cars, for instance, is a major selling point for manufacturers and cover a wide range of options from alarms to unbreakable glass. Indeed, in recent years, the four-wheel-drive 'road warrior' vehicle has become increasingly popular in many metropolitan centres. Super modern clothing can be interpreted as another manifestation of the relationship between fear and urban design. Like houses and cars, it attempts to create a secure and defensible space around the individual. In so doing, it fulfils many of the physical and symbolic functions of armour.
